First Baptist is an elder-led, deacon-assisted, congregational church. We believe that God has called men to be leaders in the home and the church and therefore believe that the offices of elder and deacon are reserved for men (although there are numerous areas in the life of the church for women to lead, serve, minister, counsel, and share wisdom).
Over the past several months, the elders of the church have discussed at least two men—who are not looking to move—who have demonstrated a consistent pattern of helpfulness and willingness to serve. We believe these men meet the qualifications for deacon as listed in 1 Timothy 3:8–13, which says:
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.
9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.
11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.
12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.
13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
It is worth noting that deacons are often assisted by their wives in caring for members and meeting various needs in the church. Therefore, they must not be gossips and must be reasonable and dependable.
Below is a list of all the men who are members of FBC and are not already serving as elders or deacons. Review the list with the qualifications found in 1 Timothy 3 in mind. Consider who has character consistent with that passage, along with a known track record of service and willingness to serve in the church. Members will be asked to circle the names of two men from this list after worship this Sunday.
